Lying at the northern end of the Windward Islands, Guadeloupe is a French overseas department which was claimed in 1635.

The islands' economy is largely based on agriculture (rum, sugar & bananas being the main exports), but the islands are largely dependent on aid from France and the European Union.

Tourism is being developed in a bid to counter the economic effects felt by the vulnerability of banana production to hurricanes.
