The Faeroe Islands are a self-governing territory of Denmark which were claimed in 1380. They lie ½way between Iceland and Scotland and have a moderate climate for their latitude.

The Faeroese have had home rule since 1948 and there is increasing internal pressure for complete independence. Negotiations began for 'sovereign nation' status under the Danish monarchy in 1998. However, since the islands' economy is dependant on Danish subsidies, full independence would be difficult.
