A former Spanish colony, the Republic of Haiti is located on the western third of the island of Hispaniola.

Since it became the first Caribbean state to achieve independence in 1804, Haiti has been characterised by a virtually constant state of political chaos.

The tourist industry, which was buoyant in the 1960s & 70s, near collapsed in the 1980s due to the pollitical instability and violence. It has yet to recover.
