A mountainous country with a few miles of coastline on the Adriatic Sea, The Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina has a population of 4 million.
Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia (whose regime [1943-90] had prevented conflict between Muslims, Croats and Serbs) a bitter and bloody war raged, as the ethnic populations fought over the land. About ¼ million died and more than 2 million were displaced, with many historic cities being destroyed. A settlement was achieved under the 1995 Dayton peace accord, and there are currently three distinct political structures in the country.
