Austria lies in central Europe, bordering Germany, Italy, Hungary and Slovakia. Despite being landlocked, it boasts a navy of 13 ships!

Austria was founded in 1918 following the collapse of the Hapsburg empire and was absorbed into Hitler's Germany in 1938. Following the departure of the last Soviet troops from the Allied Occupation Force in 1955 it regained its independence and now boasts a successful high-tech industry, strong agricultural base as well as a profitable tourist industry.

Austria joined the European Union in 1995, and only four years later became one of the first eleven EU states which introduced the euro.
